(Pam and Jack walk into the Jungle Cafe.)
Pam: Hi, Emma! We're here for lunch!
Emma: Good! You can try my special food.
Jack: Special food?
Emma: Yes! I have special food for Chinese New Year this week. Sit down and eat!
Emma: Try these.
Jack: Mmm, dumplings. I love jiao-zi!
Pam: (eats one) They are good. How do you cook them?
Emma: You boil them.
Pam: Can you tell me more about Chinese New Year food?
Emma: Sure! Here. Read this. (gives a piece of paper to her)
Chinese New Year foods have special meanings. For example, people eat dumplings at Chinese New Year. Dumplings look like pieces of gold or silver. They are a symbol of w ealth.People also cook a whole fish at Chinese New Year. The word "fish" sounds like " plenty." People do not eat the whole fish. They keep some. Then they can always have plenty in the new year.
Emma: (brings another dish) Now try this dish!
Jack: Is it nian gao?
Emma: Yes. It's New Year's cake!
Pam: I like it. How do you cook it?
Emma: You steam it. Then you fry it.
(Emma puts another dish on the table.)
Jack: You have noodles too!
Pam: Mmm. How do you cook them?
Emma: You boil them, of course!
Jack: Are you cooking all this food?
Emma: No. I have a Chinese cook this week!
